GFN Distributes 3.2 Million Mosquito Nets to Pregnant Women and Children in Jigawa

—

The Global Fund in Nigeria (GFN) on Wednesday distributed 3.2 million Insecticide Treated Mosquito Nets (ITNs) to pregnant women and children across 23 local government areas in Jigawa state.

This initiative is part of the organization’s broader efforts to combat malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV in Nigeria.

The announcement was made by Dr. Jim Thomas, the head of Global Fund in Nigeria, during a speech at the launch event in Katanga village, Kiyawa local government area.

Dr. Thomas highlighted the significant impact of malaria, particularly on pregnant women and children, labeling it as one of the major killer diseases in the country.

Dr. Thomas noted a remarkable reduction in the spread of malaria due to collective efforts by the government and development partners.

According to him, the prevalence of malaria decreased to 24.7% in 2023, down from 39.6% in 2013.

To continue this positive trend, the Global Fund Nigeria has increased its budget for 2024-2026 to support more expansive interventions.

He emphasized that the distribution of mosquito nets is a crucial part of the ongoing projects aimed at fighting malaria.

Dr. Thomas also commended the cooperation they have received from Jigawa state, describing it as both encouraging and commendable.

Governor Umar Namadi, who was present at the flag-off ceremony, reiterated the significant burden malaria poses on public healthcare in Jigawa.

He expressed the state government’s commitment to collaborating with partners to address the disease.

Governor Namadi stated, “We are not only going to support the Global Fund, but we must also prepare to maintain what they are doing because they can’t provide such services forever. Government work for the people must remain forever.”

He further explained the state’s efforts to enhance healthcare services, including increasing the health budget, upgrading hospitals, employing 1,000 health workers (including doctors), and introducing health insurance for vulnerable and less privileged individuals.

These initiatives aim to ensure access to basic healthcare services for all residents, regardless of their socio-economic status.

Reports have shown that the use of Insecticide-Treated Nets (ITNs) has significantly reduced the incidence of malaria in Jigawa.

Governor Namadi urged the people of the state to continue using the ITNs and other preventive measures for the successful elimination of malaria.
