Fuel Prices Set to Crash as Dangote, IPMAN Target N739/Litre

Petrol prices across Nigeria could fall further in the coming weeks as independent marketers move to slash the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to as low as N739 per litre nationwide.

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) says its members have been promised direct fuel supply from Dangote Refinery at N699 per litre, a move expected to significantly narrow the price gap in the downstream sector.

IPMAN President, Abubakar Maigandi, disclosed this on Monday, saying the direct sales arrangement is scheduled to commence this January.

The development comes amid an intensifying petrol price war triggered by Dangote Refinery’s aggressive price cuts. On Monday, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) reduced its pump price to N815 per litre across its Abuja retail outlets.

However, NNPCL’s price still remains N76 higher than the Dangote-backed MRS filling stations, which currently sell petrol at N739 per litre.

Despite the reductions, fuel prices across the country remain uneven, ranging between N739 and N900 per litre, with many Nigerians yet to feel the impact of the cheaper rates.

Maigandi said IPMAN members are prepared to sell petrol at a maximum of N750 per litre once Dangote Refinery begins direct distribution to independent marketers.

“Dangote promised that the refinery will start direct supply to filling stations this January,” Maigandi said.

“Once the refinery supplies independent marketers directly, queues will disappear.”

He explained that adding transportation costs of about N15 per litre to the refinery’s N699 gantry price would bring the final pump price to around N750 per litre.

“Immediately he starts direct delivery, marketers will begin buying, discharging products and reducing prices,” he added.

In December, Dangote Refinery slashed its petrol gantry price from N838 to N699 per litre, later fixing the pump price at N739 per litre at MRS outlets.

While the move set the pace for a nationwide price war entering 2026, its benefits have yet to spread evenly, with several filling stations especially in Abuja and other major cities—still dispensing petrol at prices as high as N900 per litre.
