Fresh Explosions in Maiduguri Worrisome, MURIC Tasks Defence Minister

The Muslim Rights Concern has expressed deep concern over recent explosions in Maiduguri, Borno State, which left at least 23 people dead and more than 100 others injured.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the group described the attacks as disturbing and called on the Minister of Defence, Christopher Gwabin Musa, to fulfill his commitment to safeguarding the lives of Nigerians.

According to the statement signed by its Executive Director, Ishaq Akintola, the coordinated explosions occurred on Monday, March 16, 2026, at three different locations in Maiduguri. One of the blasts reportedly took place at the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, while the other two occurred at the Post Office Market and Monday Market.

MURIC noted that the near simultaneous nature of the attacks and the level of coordination involved raise serious security concerns, describing the situation as highly challenging for security agencies operating in the state.

The organization lamented what it described as a fluctuating security response in Borno, where periods of progress are often followed by setbacks. It stressed that the rising death toll and increasing incidents of violence indicate that more decisive action is urgently needed.

The group further stated that the attacks appeared to be timed to embarrass President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly amid his official visit to the United Kingdom, alleging that the perpetrators were seeking to draw both national and international attention to the worsening security situation.

MURIC also raised concerns about the impact of the violence on northern communities, particularly in the North East and North West, warning that the region is facing severe humanitarian and security challenges.

Charging the Defence Minister to act decisively, the organization said Nigerians are increasingly feeling unsafe and urged the government to take immediate steps to halt the bloodshed and restore public confidence in the nation’s security architecture.

“The clock is ticking. Nigerians deserve to live and work without fear and to sleep peacefully,” the statement added.

The group called for urgent and sustained efforts to address insecurity, insisting that the protection of lives must remain the government’s top priority.
