France Deports Imam Who Described Their Flag as ‘Satanic’ to Africa

Mahjoub Mahjoubi Imam France French flag deported

Mahjoub Mahjoubi, a Tunisian cleric has been deported from France following inflammatory remarks against French values, including calling the French flag satanic.

Mahjoubi’s remarks, particularly his description of the French flag as “satanic” and his alleged anti-Semitic rhetoric, led to his deportation. Regarding his alleged remarks, he said he “did not insult the Jewish community, nor the flag of France.”

He had been living in France since the 1980s but did not possess French citizenship. Mahjoubi’s deportation was swift, occurring just 12 hours after his arrest, and is perceived as a demonstration of the tough immigration laws implemented by President Emmanuel Macron’s administration.

The official order for his expulsion cited his sermons as promoting a “retrograde, intolerant, and violent” image of Islam, which could incite behavior contrary to French values, discrimination against women, tensions with the Jewish community, and jihadist radicalization.

On his deportation, Mahjoub retorted stating “I will fight to return to France, where I have lived for 40 years.”

“My lawyer is going to take legal action in France. If the court does not grant me justice, I will appeal, and then I will appeal to the European Court of Human Rights,” he added.

However, the French Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin, defended Mahjoubi’s expulsion as a necessary measure to uphold French values and strengthen immigration laws.

He emphasized that the deportation of Mahjoubi was a demonstration of the effectiveness of recently approved immigration legislation. Darmanin stated, “Firmness is the rule,” and criticized Mahjoubi as a “radical imam who made unacceptable comments.”

In response to his expulsion, Mahjoubi criticized the decision as arbitrary and accused Darmanin of using his case to generate publicity around the immigration law.

Mahjoubi’s deportation has sparked debate regarding freedom of speech, immigration policies, and the balance between national security and civil liberties in France.
