Senior FIFA officials are reportedly considering a direct appeal to U.S. President Donald Trump to temporarily halt Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations during the 2026 World Cup, as concerns grow over how enforcement actions could affect fans and participating nations.
The tournament, which will run for 39 days across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is expected to attract more than one million international visitors. Reports indicate FIFA insiders believe a temporary suspension of raids could reduce fears around travel, improve the event atmosphere, and present a positive global image for the host nations.
The News Chronicle gathered that early discussions focused on keeping immigration enforcement away from match venues in the 11 American host cities. However, as planning advanced and teams prepared to use training bases across several states, conversations reportedly shifted toward a broader nationwide pause for the duration of the competition.
Officials are said to believe the proposal could be presented as a joint success story between FIFA and the U.S. government, highlighting unity and hospitality during one of the world’s biggest sporting events. FIFA president Gianni Infantino is reportedly seen as central to any discussions because of his known relationship with Trump.
ICE leadership had earlier indicated the agency would play a role in tournament security, while the administration has continued a wider immigration crackdown since Trump’s return to office.
Neither FIFA nor the White House has publicly confirmed the proposal. It also remains uncertain whether any formal request has been made or how Washington would respond if approached. With the kickoff drawing closer, the issue could become one of the major off-pitch stories ahead of the World Cup.
