The Federal Government has stepped up efforts to reform policing in Nigeria, focusing on education, capacity building, and improved training infrastructure.
This follows a high level meeting with the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and former IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, as part of plans to expand the Nigeria Police Academy and strengthen training nationwide.
The move aligns with the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reposition the police through education and improved professionalism.
Authorities have concluded plans to begin academic activities at a new southern campus of the academy in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with the first intake expected between September and November 2026.
Beyond this, the government is upgrading over 40 police colleges, focusing on accreditation, capacity expansion, and converting some into specialised training centres. Committees have also been set up to fast track infrastructure, resources, and curriculum development.
