FG Ends Dantata and Sawoe’s Contract on the Kano-Maiduguri Road after 17 years

FG ends Dantata and Sawoe's contract on the Kano-Maiduguri road after 17 years
Minister of Works David Umahi

The Kano-Maiduguri road project’s Section 1 contract, which was given to Dantata & Sawoe Ltd. back in 2007, has been terminated by the federal government of Nigeria.

This is stated in a statement made public on the ministry’s official website on Saturday by Uchenna Orji, the minister’s special adviser on media.

Minister of Works David Umahi stated that the contract’s expiration was the reason for the termination.

He underlined that the administration is dedicated to making sure that long-term infrastructure projects are finished on schedule and provide value for the money.

Furthermore, the Minister disclosed the government’s intention to review and amend the liability period for all federal projects in order to ensure long-term viability and the best possible return on public investment.

“Going forward, there will be a clear agreement on milestone completion timelines for ongoing projects under the Tax Credit Scheme.”

“My position as the Minister of Works is that everybody must take responsibility. We will no longer fold our hands and allow the projects we have awarded and even reviewed to continue to linger,” he explained.

Regarding the Flood in Bauchi State

Furthermore, Umahi promised Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed that the state’s federal road connecting Kano and Maiduguri will be repaired right away due to flooding.

A technical team from the Ministry of Works was tasked by the Minister with assessing the flood damage and coming up with a quick fix to ease the affected communities’ problems and restore access.

“It’s unfortunate that when a job is completed by contractors, we don’t even enjoy the road for five years before we’re back to square one. This is why I’ve been advocating against the one-year liability period; poorly executed jobs can last a year, but not five,” he added.

In order to ascertain the reason behind the road’s failure, he also gave Mothercart Ltd., the initial contractor for the damaged portion, instructions to join the evaluation team.

Additional insights

The Minister also praised Dangote Plc for their work on the Nnamdi Azikiwe road in Kaduna, the Lekki-Deep Seaport route, and the Apapa-Oworonshoki Motorway.

He also praised BUA’s efforts on the Ekpoma stretch of the Lokoja-Benin Highway. Furthermore, as the government stresses the necessity of these vital infrastructure projects being completed as soon as possible, the Minister asked Mainstream Energy Solutions to step up their efforts on their individual projects.

With an emphasis on making the country’s roads safer, more dependable, and an engine for economic progress, Umahi gave assurances that the government is committed to making sure Nigerians reap the financial rewards of these investments.
