Residents of Zaki Biam in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State say they now live in constant fear as kidnappers, motorcycle thieves, and suspected cult groups tighten their hold on the community.
Reports indicate that criminal gangs have intensified their activities in recent weeks, calling selected victims and demanding money with threats of abduction.
A resident described the situation as unbearable.
“People are scared because the callers sound serious and well-organized. We need urgent help before things get out of control,” he said.
He also revealed that a suspected cult group has become bolder, reportedly holding regular meetings at the shop of their alleged leader near the old SSS office along the Yam Market bypass leading to the Mechanic Site.
“These boys meet during the day and late at night. Their activities are suspicious, and everyone is worried about what they might be planning,” he added.
Residents say motorcycle theft has also surged. Thieves now target riders at night, increasing fear in a town where bikes are the primary means of transport.
“Motorcycle snatching has increased sharply. All the incidents happen at night, so people no longer move around once it gets dark,” the resident noted.
What worries the community the most is the kidnappers’ new method of issuing direct threats. In one case, a POS operator whose name is withheld reportedly paid N100,000 after receiving a call from unknown gunmen who warned that he would be kidnapped if he refused.
“Imagine being told to send money or be taken away. That is the kind of fear people here live with every day,” he said.
Residents are now appealing to the government and security agencies for urgent intervention as the situation continues to worsen.
“We are begging the government and security operatives to come to our rescue. Lives and property are no longer safe. Something must be done urgently,” a worried resident pleaded.
