Security operatives of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) have apprehended 14 individuals suspected of vandalism at the Terminal One construction site of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
The development was confirmed in a statement released on Tuesday by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr Henry Agbebire.
Agbebire revealed that the suspects were arrested around 6:00 p.m. on Monday, following a prompt, intelligence-led operation by FAAN’s security team in collaboration with the Joint Military Task Force (JMTF) and other agencies stationed at the airport.
He explained that early investigations showed the suspects allegedly infiltrated the construction site by posing as legitimate workers.
According to him, the attempt was effectively foiled through the vigilance, surveillance, and rapid intervention of FAAN security operatives and their partners.
The suspects were reportedly caught with stolen items, including copper cables and metal components removed from the site.
Agbebire added that the individuals were immediately detained, while all recovered items were handed over to relevant authorities for further investigation and necessary action.
“This successful operation underscores FAAN’s robust and proactive security framework, as well as the high level of coordination among security stakeholders within the airport environment.
“It also reflects the Authority’s zero-tolerance stance on any form of criminal activity targeting critical aviation infrastructure.
“FAAN remains resolute in its mandate to protect all airport assets and ensure the safety and integrity of ongoing development projects nationwide.
“The Authority continues to enhance surveillance, access control systems, and inter-agency collaboration to deter and respond decisively to security threats,” he said.
The authority also urged the public to stay alert and promptly report any suspicious activities around airport premises to security agencies.
Meanwhile, the suspects have been transferred to the Beesam Divisional Police for further investigation.
