Nigeria’s recent extension of its continental shelf, as approved by the United Nations, has significant implications for the country. The extension means that the country’s jurisdiction now extends from 200 nautical miles to 220 nautical miles and encompasses the seabed and subsoil of the submarine areas beyond Nigeria’s land territory. This achievement showcases Nigeria’s growing influence in the global geopolitical landscape and marks an important milestone in the nation’s territorial expansion.
However, even as we celebrate this achievement, we must be actively aware of the numerous advantages it offers for the country. Firstly, it provides access to additional resources and opportunities, including mineral deposits, oil, and gas reserves, which can boost Nigeria’s economy and enhance its energy security. The additional resources obtained from the extended continental shelf can stimulate economic growth, leading to job creation, increased investments, and improved living standards for the Nigerian people, thereby contributing to the nation’s sustainable development and bolstering its position in the global trade market.
Furthermore, the expanded continental shelf affirms and strengthens Nigeria’s maritime boundaries, providing legal protection and security for its territorial waters. This increased jurisdiction helps protect Nigerian fishermen, researchers, and other stakeholders operating in the marine sector.
The successful extension of Nigeria’s continental shelf demonstrates the country’s ability to assert its territorial rights and negotiate diplomatic agreements within the framework of international law. The peaceful and cooperative approach deployed in securing the extension of the continental shelf sets a positive example for other nations seeking to expand their territories. It showcases the country’s commitment to international law and diplomatic negotiations as effective means of addressing territorial issues.
It is noteworthy that this extension of the continental shelf may not have been possible without the intervention of the Buhari led administration that set up the High-Powered Presidential Committee on Nigeria’s Extended Continental Shelf Project (HPPC) in 2015. This Committee, chaired by the then Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, included experts from various fields, such as geology, oceanography, and foreign affairs. It successfully aggregated the cumulative expertise and dedication of its membership in revitalizing the project and addressing bureaucratic obstacles that had hitherto worked against progress since 2009, when the country submitted an application to the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS). Today’s outcome highlights Nigeria’s capacity to undertake complex scientific and technical projects.
