EU Unveils €9m Energy Projects in Nigeria

In a bid to bolster Nigeria’s energy sector, the European Union (EU) has unveiled two groundbreaking projects valued at €9 million.

The initiative aims to tackle the nation’s energy challenges and promote sustainability.
The EU, in collaboration with the Federal Government and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, announced the projects during a workshop held in Abuja on Tuesday.
These projects are integral to addressing Nigeria’s pressing need for clean, affordable, and sustainable energy.
Nigeria’s energy consumption per capita has been notably lower compared to other nations, highlighting the urgency for intervention.
With an emphasis on advancing energy accessibility and fostering circular economy practices, the EU aims to catalyze positive change in Nigeria’s energy landscape.
The two projects, “Small Hydro Power Development for Agro-industry Use in Nigeria” and “Advancing Nigeria’s Green and Just Transition to Net Zero through Circular Economy Practices,” are slated to run for three years each. They are designed to enhance energy accessibility, promote circular economy practices, and mitigate pollution and climate change impacts.
Ms. Samuela Isopi, the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, highlighted the significance of these projects in bolstering Nigeria’s transition towards a sustainable future.
The Small Hydro Power Development project aims to increase small hydropower capacity, thereby promoting productivity in agriculture and other sectors, ultimately enhancing livelihoods and food security.
The second project focuses on managing used off-grid energy equipment and plastics through circular economy practices, aiming to mitigate pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. It also seeks to strengthen policy frameworks and support SME-led circular economy practices in the energy sector.
