England manager Thomas Tuchel is already facing mounting pressure ahead of the World Cup after former Premier League striker Troy Deeney blasted his squad selection and warned that failure to win the tournament should cost him his job.
The News Chronicle reports that criticism intensified after Tuchel left out major stars including Phil Foden and Cole Palmer from his World Cup squad. Deeney described the team as a “B team,” questioning why proven talents were ignored while other players with inconsistent form still made the final list.
The ex-Watford attacker also criticised the new addition of Jordan Henderson, saying that Tuchel’s choice in selection seemed baffling and inconsistent. He says England are in danger of going into the competition without some of their most creative and lethal attacking players.
Tuchel defended his choices in the face of the controversy, saying he chose players based on balance, camaraderie and past camp results. The former Chelsea boss said he wanted a team with tactical discipline, hunger and energy rather than one built around star names.
Now, the question is whether Tuchel’s audacious decisions can finally deliver World Cup glory for England, or deepen exasperation among fans and pundits with high hopes.
