#EndSARS: Fayemi Constitutes Panel To Investigate SARS Related Abuses

As part of efforts to address the #EndSARS protests rocking the nation, Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi has constituted a panel of inquiry and restitution for victims of SARS related abuses in the state.

The Governor disclosed the development in a statement obtained by The News Chronicle.

He said, “In line with the recommendations of the National Economic Council (NEC) on #EndSARS yesterday, I have today constituted a panel of inquiry and restitution for victims of SARS related abuses in Ekiti State.”

“The panel of inquiry will look at all verified cases of SARS brutality and fatality and ensure offending SARS officials are identified and adequate measures are taken against them while the victims and their families are duly compensated.”

“Membership of the panel of inquiry includes: A retired judge of the State High Court as chairperson and representation from civil society organisations (CSO) including youth groups. The Honourable Attorney General will publish additional details including new information on how our citizens can access the panel.”

Delineating on the burning issue, he said “We recognize the freedom of our youth to peaceful expression about the state of policing in Nigeria.

“We firmly believe that police accountability including respect for citizens’ rights and indeed community policing can best be achieved at the level of the states.”

“There is now an urgent need to properly articulate what we mean by Police reform in practical terms. It is beyond doubt that there is a need for a review and redefinition of the role, functions as well as the organisational structure of our police.”

“My administration will continue to participate actively in this national dialogue. We have suggested that considerations should be given to the merit of decentralising policing in Nigeria. We have also proposed that the Nigerian Police Council as enshrined in the constitution of Nigeria should be more active and regular in its oversight function of policing,” he said.
