The Plateau State Government has put a 24-hour curfew in place in the Jos-Bukuru Metropolis due to a breakdown of law and order.
Mr. Gyang Bere, the Director of Press and Public Affairs for Governor Caleb Mutfwang, announced this on Sunday. He said the curfew is meant to protect lives and keep the peace.
“Governor Mutfwang has enforced a 24-hour curfew in the Jos-Bukuru area starting from midnight on Sunday, August 4, 2024,” Bere stated.
The decision came after discussions with state security agencies. They observed that some individuals took advantage of the nationwide protests to cause chaos, attacking innocent people.
These criminals, armed with knives, machetes, and other dangerous weapons, broke into shops and restaurants in Jos North Local Government Area, stealing food and valuables.
Governor Mutfwang stressed that the curfew is for the safety of all citizens and urged everyone to follow it fully.
Security agencies have been ordered to enforce the curfew strictly. The governor warned that anyone planning further violence will face severe consequences.
He also asked security forces to stay alert to prevent any more disturbances.
Governor Mutfwang thanked the citizens of Plateau State, especially religious leaders, for supporting government policies and following directives during the protests. He praised their commitment to peace and unity.
“The peaceful behavior of our people before, during, and after the nationwide protest is commendable. I encourage everyone to keep promoting peace as we work together to build a united and progressive Plateau,” the governor said.
Governor Mutfwang concluded by reminding everyone that working together is essential for a safe and prosperous Plateau State.
Reacting to this development in a video on his X handle, Prophet Isa El-Buba of EBOMI condemned the imposition of the the curfew describing it as unnecessary considering the peaceful conduct of the protest in the state.
