Elon Musk’s X Locks Horns With Australia Over Content Removal

—

The Australian regulatory body has taken a firm stance against X formerly Twitter, arguing that the platform shouldn’t override Australian law in determining what content can be accessed within the country.

Twitter, now known as X, is pushing back against an order from the e-Safety Commissioner to remove 65 posts depicting the stabbing of an Assyrian Christian bishop in Sydney, categorized as a terrorist attack.
Representatives from the cyber regulatory body have emphasized that X’s global content removal policy contradicts the principles outlined in Australia’s Online Safety Act.
X’s refusal to comply with the order globally is seen as a direct challenge to Australia’s authority over internet regulations.
The company maintained its commitment to free speech but has opted to block access to the posts within Australia while resisting global removal.
The dispute centers on the feasibility of enforcing Australian law regarding objectionable content and the effectiveness of geoblocking as a solution.
