Election Tribunal: Tension Heightens In Kano As NNPP Supporters Take To The Streets

A ton of aggrieved youths alleged to be supporters of the New Nigerian People’s Party, NNPP have taken to the streets of Kano in protest. Sources say the protest is not unconnected to the sack of the Kano state Governor Abba Yusuf by the Appeal Court judgment delivered on the 17th of November.

The protesters began a procession from Kofar Dan Agundi, along the BUK axis moving towards the Gidan Murtala before armed security personnel contained them. The protesters were said to be heading towards the famous Mahaha field where they were reportedly planning to hold a prayer session to appeal for divine intervention on the court verdict against Governor Yusuf Abba.

The youths who mounted bonfires were dispersed by men of the Nigerian Police who used teargas canisters to displace them. Media reports have it that the Kano State Police Command had earlier revealed that some unidentified politicians in the state were plotting to shut off normal activities. The police however assured of their commitment to secure lives and property in the state.

Meanwhile, as at press time, efforts to reach the Spokesperson of the Kano State Police Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa regarding the ongoing unrest in the state, failed.

However, at the weekend, Secretary to the APC in Kano state Zakari Sarina and Assistant Publicity Secretary of the Kano state NNPP in Kano state Wada Dao signed a peace pact on behalf of their party members.

Recall that the Appeal Court sitting in Abuja had earlier sacked the Kano state Governor Abba Yusuf and reaffirmed the declaration of APC’s Nasir Gawuna as the authentic winner of the March 28 Governorship election in the state. In a sharp dramatic twist, Certified True Copy of the court surfaced where parts of the document saw the judgment go in favor of NNPP’s Abba Yusuf. This development has continued to draw different shades of reactions from both parties.

In a reaction, the Chief Registrar, Umar Mohammed Bangari of the Appeal Court had earlier stated that the judgment sacking the Kano state Governor Abba Yusuf still stands adding that the CTC controversy was a clerical error.
