The Adamawa Field Office has raised concern over the increasing number of donkey abattoirs operating in the state, warning that unchecked slaughter could threaten the species despite current trade regulations.
The State Coordinator, Mr. Abubakar A. Hamid, gave the warning during an engagement with stakeholders in Yola.
He noted that while donkeys are not currently listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, CITES, Nigeria has existing controls in place.
“An Executive Order issued in 2022 prohibits the export of donkeys and their derivatives,” Mr. Hamid said. He stressed the need for proactive conservation measures to prevent the species from becoming endangered.
The coordinator also commended the Nigeria Customs Service for its efforts in combating illicit wildlife crimes, and urged stakeholders to support enforcement and monitoring to protect donkey populations in Adamawa and across the region.
