DJ Cuppy: ‘I Get Marriage Proposals Every Day’

DJ Cuppy, born Florence Otedola, addressed the pressure on her to marry in a new interview with Marie Claire Nigeria.

Cuppy, who holds degrees from New York University, Oxford, and King’s College London, joked that her academic pursuits have doubled as a way to dodge questions about a husband. She said: “I call it avoidance of marriage. Every time my grandma asks, ‘Where’s your husband?’, I show her a new certificate.”

She said the pressure to marry does not come only from strangers online. “I get marriage proposals every day. And I’m not even talking about fans,” she said. “Everyone is apparently trying to help me when I have not asked to be helped.”

At 33, Cuppy said she now measures her choices differently than she did in her twenties. “I mistook potential for alignment, but now, at 33, I understand better what’s meant for me,” she said.

She also shared a moment where her own profile overtook her father’s. “Recently, my dad told me that someone stopped him at the airport to take a picture because they recognized him as ‘Cuppy’s dad,'” she said.

“It made me feel good because normally, I’m Femi’s daughter, but on that day, to that person, he was my dad.”

DJ Cuppy has previously spoken about learning to make choices without external pressure, including canceling her own 30th birthday party days before it was set to happen because she wanted a quiet day instead. In the same interview, she said she no longer builds her decisions around other people’s expectations. Cuppy has not named anyone she is currently dating or engaged to.
