A 38-year-old woman named Hajiya Tabawa Ado, who had recently been deported from Saudi Arabia, tragically took her own life by plunging into a stream in the Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
This decision was reportedly prompted by persistent harassment from the agent who had sponsored her trip to Saudi Arabia.
The woman had entered into an agreement with the agent, who financed her journey with the understanding that she would repay him.
In Saudi Arabia, she found herself unable to endure the harsh treatment she experienced while working as a house help.
Opting to escape, she was apprehended and subsequently deported to Nigeria. Faced with the challenge of repaying the sponsoring agent, who demanded his money back, she found herself in a distressing situation.
A local resident, requesting anonymity, shared insights into the tragic incident, stating, “Women and men have been traveling to Saudi Arabia in search of greener pastures, with some women serving as house helps.
She was sponsored to Saudi Arabia, and when she saw that she could not bear the maltreatment in the house where she worked, she decided to run. In the process, she was arrested and deported back to Nigeria.
The agent had been pressuring her to repay the money, which she did not have. Later, I heard that she drowned in the Kafin Kainuwa stream and died.”
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Jigawa State Command, through its spokesperson, CSC Adamu Shehu, confirmed the incident, revealing that it occurred on Christmas Day around 7:45 pm.
The NSCDC received information about the 38-year-old woman, Hajiya Tabawa Ado Musa, who plunged into a stream called Rafin Kainuwa in Marakawa Ringim town.
Her lifeless body was discovered the following day and taken to Ringin General Hospital, where a medical doctor confirmed her death.
Further investigation revealed that the woman had been suffering from epilepsy for several years.
Despite her struggles, she leaves behind a husband and children. The community laid her to rest in accordance with Islamic rites.
