Death In UNIZIK Hostel: School Management Allege Suicide

Awka – A 200-level male student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State was yesterday found dead, hanging on a rope inside his room in one of the male hostels in the Universities.

The deceased, said to a native of Isuikwuato Local Government area of Abia state, was said to be studying Industrial Physics.

TNC correspondent in Anambra who visited the scene, saw the deceased’s body dangling with rope around his neck, inside Room 332 in Basil Olih hostel, Block D in the campus.

Police operatives were also seen, taking pictures and making observations.

According to one of the students in the hostel who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the incident happened at about 3pm in the evening.

He said he was in his room when he heard shouts from the deceased room and then rushed outside, to see students gathered and shouting.

“One of the roommates to the deceased told u that they just returned from classes to meet their roommate dead on the rope. They immediately raised alarm and the school authorities were alerted,” he narrated.

On what could have caused the death, the source said the incident is still a mystery as the deceased was the quiet type and never involved in any troubles.

The Chief Security Officer of the University, Mr Ken Chukwurah who said investigation is ongoing, noted that it will be wrong to say what caused the death as at the time.

He also confirmed that the student was a student of the University.

“We have invited the Police and they have moved the corpse. Nobody will be in a hurry to say this was what caused the death now,” he said.

Chukwurah also revealed that there were rumours that the room was broken into but maintained that they were not going to work with rumours and would wait for the Police to conclude their investigations.

He reassured the students that there was no need to panic, stating that there were no reasons for such.

Confirming the incident, the Anambra Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Tochukwu Ikenga described the incident as unfortunate, adding that investigations were ongoing.
