Davido Opens Up on What Adeleke Faced in Osun Election, Reveals Next Move for Youths

Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has described the re-election of his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, as a remarkable victory achieved despite what he called formidable political opposition.

Davido spoke on Tuesday while addressing journalists at his country home following the governor’s victory in the Aug. 15 Osun State governorship election.

Congratulating his uncle, the singer described the election as a fiercely contested battle, claiming that several prominent political figures rallied against the incumbent governor.

“Let me congratulate my governor for his re-election for the hard-fought battle. Let me not say battle but war, where you have 17 governors, 50 senators, House of Reps, I don’t know how many they were against one man and he came out victorious. God is good,” Davido said.

He attributed Adeleke’s victory largely to the support of Osun voters, whom he praised for standing firmly behind the governor and protecting their votes during the election.

Davido said the overwhelming support for the Adeleke family left him emotional on several occasions during election day.

“I can’t remember how many times I cried that day because the love was massive,” he said.

The singer said the governor’s re-election should serve as a lesson to political leaders across the country, arguing that leaders who genuinely serve their people would receive their backing at the polls.

“My uncle should be an example to all other people out there. It shows all other governors out there that if you work for the people, the people will be with you and God,” he said.

Davido also thanked the people of Osun State for supporting Adeleke and his family despite what he described as attempts at intimidation and vote-buying during the election.

Beyond politics, the singer announced plans to expand his involvement in youth and sports development in the state.

Davido, who serves as chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund, said he deliberately delayed some of his planned initiatives until after the governorship election.

“As chairman of the Sports Trust Fund, I want to do a lot of things but waited for the election to be over,” he said.

According to him, one of the initiatives under consideration is the development of a recreation centre for young people, equipped with facilities such as football pitches, swimming pools and basketball courts.

He said the proposed centre would provide young people with opportunities to discover, develop and showcase their sporting talents while promoting healthy recreation.

Davido has remained one of Adeleke’s most vocal celebrity supporters and actively participated in the governor’s campaign ahead of the election.

Adeleke secured a second term after defeating his major challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, in the Aug. 15 poll.

Following the election, Davido said his attention would now shift towards initiatives aimed at expanding opportunities for young people in Osun State, particularly through sports and recreation.
