Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has reacted to the growing wave of Nigerians jokingly demanding regular updates on the operations of his refinery after becoming shareholders.
The development followed the launch of the Initial Public Offering (IPO) of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE, which opened to the public on September 14, 2026.
Since the offer opened, Nigerians who bought shares have flooded social media with jokes declaring themselves “business partners” and “co-owners” of the refinery, with some demanding updates on the company’s operations.
Speaking during the 2026 Qatar Economic Forum in an interview with Bloomberg’s Francine Lacqua, Dangote acknowledged the trend.
“You must have seen that they’ve been calling me now for a board meeting,” Dangote said, drawing laughter from the audience.
The billionaire’s comment came amid a viral social media trend in which new shareholders jokingly demanded that Dangote provide regular briefings on “their company.”
Some investors have also posted mock ownership certificates and videos portraying themselves as members of the refinery’s management team, while comedians have amplified the trend through skits.
Reuters reported that the IPO, which allows investors to buy as few as 10 shares, has generated unusual public interest and turned share ownership into a major social media phenomenon.
The shares were offered at ₦525 each, with a minimum subscription of 10 shares, valued at ₦5,250.
Dangote has said the broader objective of the IPO is to democratise wealth creation by giving ordinary Nigerians and other investors an opportunity to own part of the refinery.
He also said the company is targeting up to 10 million shareholders, potentially creating such a large shareholder base that its annual general meeting could be held in a stadium.
