Dalung Explains Why He Left APC

Former Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung, has accused Nigerian politicians of constantly repositioning themselves for political and personal benefits rather than remaining committed to ideology.

Dalung made the assertion while speaking on the podcast Conversations with Prof. Jideofor Adibe, where he reflected on his political journey and the ideological shifts that have shaped Nigeria’s major political parties.

The former minister, who described himself as one of the founding members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said the party played a significant role in ending military rule and returning the country to democratic governance.

According to him, his subsequent decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) was driven largely by his desire to contribute to national unity and the development of the country.

Dalung also spoke highly of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a good listener who was willing to give attention to issues he considered right and in the national interest.

However, he said his decision to leave the APC in 2022 was driven by what he described as the party’s departure from the fundamental principles of equity and justice, particularly in the formation of its leadership structures.

Dalung’s comments highlight the fluid nature of Nigerian politics, where politicians frequently move between parties amid changing political interests, alliances and calculations.
