In Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State, over 100 wheelchairs were given to 100 people who have disabilities.
These wheelchairs were donated by Khadija Lukman, a member of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC), which is a program in Nigeria where young graduates serve the country for a period of time.
Khadija Lukman said she promised to help people with disabilities while she was in school, and now she’s fulfilling that promise by donating these wheelchairs.
She made it clear that the purpose of giving these wheelchairs is not to encourage begging on the streets but to help these individuals move around and engage in productive activities.
She explained that the wheelchairs will help them go to school, work, places of worship, or learn a trade so they can be independent and not rely on others or resort to begging.
The project was supported by Barr Ayuba Gufwan, the Director of the Beautiful Gate Handicap Center in Jos, Plateau state.
Mrs. Rifkatu Yakubu, the Bauchi state Coordinator of NYSC, praised Khadija for her efforts in helping people with disabilities and encouraged others to support corps members who want to do community projects.
One of the beneficiaries, speaking on behalf of others, thanked Khadija, NYSC, and the project sponsor, and prayed for their success.
In addition to the wheelchairs, Khadija also trained 100 youths in the area on how to make body spray, liquid soap, baseline, room freshener, and other products.
