Christmas: CAN Urges Churches to Celebrate Wisely Amid Security, Economic Challenges

As Nigerians celebrate Christmas with the rest of the world, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has advised churches across the country to celebrate with wisdom, caution, and a strong sense of responsibility due to ongoing economic and security challenges.

In his Christmas message on Wednesday, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, described Christmas as a holy season that reflects God’s love, hope, and the victory of light over darkness.
He noted that despite the difficulties facing the nation, the birth of Jesus Christ is a reminder that God has not abandoned Nigeria and that hope is still alive.
Archbishop Okoh stressed that the safety of worshippers must be a top priority.
He urged churches, especially those in areas with security concerns, to take practical measures to protect their members.
According to him, where security presence is weak, church leaders should consider holding services in safer locations or organising smaller gatherings that are easier to secure.
He explained that this advice is not based on fear but on love and responsibility, noting that church leaders are caretakers of the lives God has entrusted to them.
The CAN president also called on security agencies to increase their presence around churches during the festive period and encouraged cooperation between churches and law enforcement to ensure peaceful celebrations.
He urged Nigerians to remember those who are grieving, displaced, or suffering due to violence and hardship, and called for a renewed spirit of peace, justice, and unity among citizens.
Archbishop Okoh concluded by expressing hope that the New Year will bring renewed faith, healing, and lasting peace to Nigeria.
