Cholera Outbreak: Plateau Confirms 14 Deaths, 441 Suspected Infections

The Plateau State Government has confirmed 441 suspected cholera cases and 14 deaths across four local government areas since the outbreak began in June 2026, with authorities intensifying efforts to curb further spread of the disease.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Ba’amlong, disclosed the figures in Jos on Monday, stating that the state had also recorded 20 positive Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) results and six laboratory-confirmed cases through stool culture.
According to him, the outbreak has affected 25 wards and 107 settlements, while only three patients remain on admission, all in Jos North Local Government Area, indicating that ongoing interventions are producing positive results.

Ba’amlong said the outbreak was first detected in Mangu Local Government Area, which recorded 53 suspected cases and 10 deaths before transmission was brought under control. He noted that the last reported case in Mangu was recorded on July 22, 2026.
He added that Jos North remains the most affected area with 277 suspected cases and four deaths, while Jos South recorded one confirmed case with no fatality. Barkin Ladi has also reported 23 suspected cases but no deaths.
The commissioner attributed most of the fatalities to delayed presentation at health facilities and urged residents to seek immediate medical care at the first sign of symptoms.
He said the state government, in collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and other partners, has strengthened disease surveillance, expanded treatment centres, distributed medical supplies and intensified public awareness campaigns.
Ba’amlong also urged residents to maintain proper hygiene, drink safe water, treat household water through boiling or chlorination, and promptly report suspected cholera cases to health authorities.
