Celebrating Christmas Doing Things Christ Came To Save Us From

—

Christmas arrives each year clothed in carols, lights, and loud proclamations of joy, yet beneath the glitter often lies a troubling irony. A season meant to honor the birth of Christ is frequently reduced to a carnival of excess, where the very vices He came to uproot are paraded as proof of celebration. It is a bitter pill to swallow that the name of Christ is invoked while His teachings are casually discarded.
The manger that preached humility has been replaced by tables groaning under excess. In the name of celebration, moderation is thrown to the wind, and self-control is mocked as old-fashioned. The season that should whisper repentance now shouts indulgence, as though restraint were an enemy of joy rather than its guardian.
Many celebrate Christmas by loosening moral anchors, treating fornication and adultery as harmless thrills of the season. What was meant to be a holy remembrance becomes an excuse for fleeting pleasure, as if the birth of purity itself licenses impurity. It is a tragic contradiction to celebrate the coming of the Light while deliberately walking deeper into shadows.
Drunkenness, too, is often baptized with festive language. Cups overflow, not in thanksgiving, but in excess that dulls conscience and reason. The season that should inspire clarity of spirit instead leaves many stumbling, mistaking intoxication for happiness and noise for peace.
Christmas, for some, becomes a marketplace of vanity. Pride struts in fine clothes, and competition replaces contentment. People measure the success of the season by what they wear, what they eat, and what they post, forgetting that the first Christmas was marked by simplicity, not spectacle.
There are those who turn Christmas into a theatre of hypocrisy—singing hymns with lips while hearts remain unmoved. Church attendance becomes a ritual without repentance, a brief visit to holiness before returning to habits that mock its message. It is like washing the outside of a cup while the inside remains untouched.
Violence, quarrels, and reckless behavior also rise during this period, often fueled by excess and entitlement. Instead of peace on earth, homes and streets echo with arguments and avoidable tragedies. The Prince of Peace is remembered in words, yet ignored in conduct.
Generosity, a core lesson of Christmas, is sometimes twisted into showmanship. Gifts are given not out of love, but out of obligation or the desire to impress. The heart of giving is lost when charity becomes a performance rather than a sacrifice.
Even families are not spared from this contradiction. Christmas tables gather relatives who share food but not forgiveness. Old grudges sit beside new meals, proving that reconciliation, though preached, is often postponed.
Christ came to save humanity from sin, not to provide a seasonal cover for it. To celebrate His birth while clinging stubbornly to the chains He came to break is to miss the point entirely. It is like praising a doctor while refusing the cure.
True celebration of Christmas is not found in excess, noise, or moral compromise. It is found in repentance, humility, love, and obedience to the values Christ embodied. Anything less is merely a costume worn for a day, not a transformation of the heart.
The tragedy of modern Christmas is not that people celebrate, but that they celebrate wrongly. They dance around the message while ignoring its demand. The season calls not just for joy, but for change; not just for songs, but for surrendered lives.
Until Christmas returns to Christ—until the celebration reflects the Savior rather than the self—it will remain a beautiful festival wrapped around a hollow core. For a celebration that forgets its purpose is like a lamp without oil: impressive in form, but powerless in effect.
