CBN Imposes 0.5% Cybersecurity Levy on Electronic Transactions, Kaizer Chiefs Hesitant on R30 Million Deal for Nigerian Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali – Trending Today

1. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has mandated financial institutions to implement a 0.5% cybersecurity levy on all electronic transactions, as per the 2024 Cyber Crime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Amendment Act. This levy aims to fund the National Cyber Security Fund, administered by the Office of the National Security Adviser. Financial institutions must deduct and remit the levy, with penalties for non-compliance. However, certain transactions, including loan disbursements, salary payments, and interbank transfers, are exempted from this levy.

2. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman offered condolences and sympathy to President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed of the UAE following the death of Sheikh Tahnoon bin Mohammed Al-Nahyan, who served as the Ruler’s Representative of the Al Ain Region. Sheikh Tahnoon was a prominent figure in the UAE, known for his close ties to the country’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. In return, Sheikh Mohamed expressed gratitude for the sentiments and also conveyed condolences over the death of Saudi poet Prince Badr bin Abdul Mohsen.

3. Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo praised his experience flying with Air Peace from Lagos to London, describing it as pleasant. He expressed his satisfaction during a conversation with Nnenna Onyema, the daughter of Air Peace’s CEO, while on his trip. In a viral video shared by Air Peace, Obasanjo commended the airline’s services, stating that he didn’t encounter any issues during both his outbound and return flights. The airline which obtained permits for foreign carrier operations and plans to commence direct flights to London in March 2024, also expressed gratitude for Obasanjo’s patronage.

4. Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima was unable to attend the 2024 US-Africa Business Summit in Dallas, Texas, to represent President Bola Tinubu due to a technical fault with his aircraft. Advised by the Presidential Air Fleet, he made a detour, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar will now represent President Tinubu. The summit aims to enhance economic cooperation between the United States and African countries, bringing together political and business leaders from across the regions. Notable African heads of state expected to attend include President Joseph Boakai of Liberia, President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi, and others. The event which runs from May 6-9th, will feature high-level dialogues and networking sessions to explore investment opportunities.

5. The Presidency on Monday responded to allegations by Atiku Abubakar regarding the Lagos-Calabar highway project and potential conflicts of interest involving President Bola Tinubu and Seyi Tinubu. It refuted claims, stating that Seyi Tinubu’s position on the board of CDK Industries does not conflict with the project. The Presidency highlighted Nigeria’s attractiveness to foreign investors and economic growth under Tinubu’s administration and dismissed reports about Nigeria’s economic reclassification by the IMF. It criticized Atiku’s business dealings during his vice presidency and stated that Seyi Tinubu had the right to pursue business interests.  

6. Crystal Palace dominated Manchester United 4-0 at Selhurst Park. Two goals from Michael Olise, along with strikes from Jean-Philippe Mateta and Tyrick Mitchell, showcased Palace’s impressive form. Manchester United, plagued by injuries, struggled to create opportunities. The absence of Bruno Fernandes was notably felt, with the team failing to score in both games he’s missed this season. The victory leaves Palace in a strong position, while United’s top-six hopes diminish further.

7. Kaizer Chiefs, the five-time South African Premier Soccer League champions, are hesitant to pursue Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali due to his hefty price tag of R30 million. Nwabali, who gained attention for his performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, has attracted interest from European and Saudi Arabian clubs as well. While Chiefs initially showed interest, they have reportedly backed off due to the high price. However, with uncertainty surrounding their current goalkeeper’s future, the Chiefs may reconsider their stance. Additionally, Nwabali’s contract with Chippa United runs until 2026, but his club is open to offers if they meet their criteria. Nwabali has also been linked with Queens Park Rangers in England, Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, and Royal Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium. He has kept 10 clean sheets in 22 appearances in the current PSL season.
