Cameroon’s President Appoints Son Franck Biya as Vice President and Head of Armed Forces

In a move that consolidates power within the Biya family, President Paul Biya has appointed his son, Franck Emmanuel Biya, as Vice President of the Republic and Head of the Armed Forces. The decision was announced in an official decree dated April 4, 2026.

The decree also named Franck Biya as Minister Delegate at the Ministry of Defence, placing him at the center of Cameroon’s political and military leadership. “Mr Franck Emmanuel BIYA is appointed Vice President of the Republic of Cameroon,” the decree stated. It added that he would simultaneously serve in a defence capacity.

According to the presidency, the appointments were made in accordance with constitutional provisions and defence laws and were based on “service requirements.” The decree will be published in the Official Gazette.

The appointments come months after the 93-year-old Biya was sworn in for an eighth term, following a controversial election in which he reportedly secured 54 percent of the vote against opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who received 35 percent. Bakary rejected the results, alleging electoral fraud, claims denied by the government.

Biya has ruled Cameroon since 1982, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders. Critics argue that appointing his son to two powerful positions underscores concerns about dynastic politics and the consolidation of power within a single family.

The move has sparked debate about governance in Africa, raising questions about the future of democracy on the continent and the prevalence of political dynasties.
