The Nigerian Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General O.O. Oluyede, and the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, have arrived in Maiduguri to assess the worsening security situation and take direct control of ongoing military operations.
Their visit follows a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who ordered all service chiefs to relocate to the troubled city after a series of insurgent attacks.
The directive came in the wake of multiple bomb explosions on Monday evening that killed over 20 people and left more than 100 others injured.
Upon arrival, the top military officials were received by the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, alongside the General Officer Commanding and other senior officers at the Air Force Base in Maiduguri.
The visit underscores the Federal Government’s renewed push to tackle rising insurgency in Borno State, particularly following the recent attacks believed to have been carried out by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province fighters.
President Tinubu had earlier condemned the bombings, describing them as “desperate acts of evil-minded terrorist groups,” while assuring citizens of intensified military operations to eliminate criminal elements. Security forces have since increased surveillance and deployment across affected areas in a bid to restore normalcy.
