In the early hours of Tuesday, a fire broke out at Owode Market in Offa, Kwara State, burning down several shops.Â
A video of the incident showed shop owners mourning as they watched their properties being destroyed.
One trader in the video suggested that the fire might have started from cooking activities rather than from the electricity.
The fire was eventually put out by personnel from the Federal Fire Service and Kwara State Fire Service.
At least five shops were affected, but the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
The cause of the fire is also under investigation until the fire service releases an official statement.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time such an incident has occurred in Offa. Just eight months ago, a residential building in the town was also engulfed in a midnight fire, causing damage estimated at N6.5 million.
The fire affected a two-bedroom flat and four shops in the Kowope compound, Olorunkuse area of Offa.
Fortunately, the quick response of the firefighters prevented further damage, saving property worth an estimated N13.3 million.
