BREAKING: 24hrs After First Lady’s Visit, IDPs Shut Benue–Nasarawa Road, Demand Return Home

Barely 24 hour after the First Lady’s visit to Benue state, vehicular movement was crippled Wednesday along the Yelwata axis of the Benue–Nasarawa highway as hundreds of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) staged a protest, demanding their return to ancestral homes.

Chanting “We want to go back home,” the protesters mostly victims of suspected herdsmen attacks blocked both lanes of the busy road for hours, leaving motorists and commuters stranded.

Eyewitnesses said the protesters, fed up with years in overcrowded camps, decried government inaction on restoring security to their communities.

“We have suffered enough. We want to return to our homes and farms,” one protester told reporters.

Security operatives were deployed to maintain order, though tensions remained high.
Attempts to reach officials of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) were unsuccessful as of press time.
