According to reports, a wooden boat carrying vendors heading to Okubie community with food and goods to coastal communities caught fire and exploded in the middle of a river in Beyelsa state.
The accident occurred at Ezetu 1 community river in Southern Ijaw local government area claimed the lives of all the 20 persons on the boat.
Meanwhile, rescue teams are trying to recover the bodies of the passengers.
Both the state police and the Maritime Workers Union in Bayelsa confirmed the accident.
According to the head of the Association of Coastal and Waterways Communities, several persons lost their lives because they were not wearing life jackets.
