Borno: Veterinarian Warns Residents Against Dog Bites, Rabies

A veterinarian and public health expert in Maiduguri, Dr Phenies Pola, has urged residents to take precautions against dog bites, warning that they remain the leading cause of rabies transmission to humans.

Pola gave the warning in an interview on Wednesday in Maiduguri, describing rabies as a deadly viral infection that poses a serious threat to both humans and animals.

According to him, rabies attacks the central nervous system of dogs and other mammals, including humans, and is almost always fatal once clinical symptoms begin to appear.

He explained that the disease is commonly transmitted through the bite, scratch or saliva of an infected animal, with dogs accounting for the majority of human rabies infections.

Pola urged pet owners to vaccinate their dogs and cats regularly, stressing that routine vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent the disease.

Residents should avoid contact with stray animals and immediately seek medical attention after any dog bite or scratch,” he said.

The affected area should be washed thoroughly with soap and clean water before reporting to the nearest health facility.”

The public health expert also called on community leaders, schools and religious organisations to intensify public awareness campaigns on the dangers of rabies and the importance of prevention.

He stressed that eliminating dog-mediated rabies would require coordinated efforts by government agencies, veterinary professionals and members of the public.

Pola further advised residents to promptly report animals suspected of having rabies to veterinary authorities to enable early investigation and appropriate control measures.

He noted that timely reporting, responsible pet ownership and increased public awareness remain critical to protecting communities from the deadly disease.
