Borno Police Re-Arrests Escaped Convict Kyari Kur After September Flood
Escaped Convict Kyari Kur

The Borno State Police Command has re-arrested 28-year-old Kyari Kur, a convict who had previously escaped custody during a flood that struck Maiduguri in September 2024.

Kur, who was serving a sentence for criminal conspiracy and theft, had broken free after the Medium Security Custodial Center in Maiduguri was compromised by the flood, which caused severe damage to the facility’s perimeter fence.
According to a statement released on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, Kur had been serving his sentence when the flood caused the collapse of the prison’s fence, providing him and potentially other inmates with an opportunity to flee.
The flood, which affected large parts of Maiduguri, left the custodial center vulnerable, enabling Kur to escape.
“Unfortunately, he [Kur] escaped due to the devastating flood incident in September 2024, which collapsed the fence of the Centre. The Borno State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police CP Mohammed Lawal Yusufu, has  re-arrested the escaped convict, Kyari Kur (also known as Henry),” the statement read.
Kur’s escape triggered an intense search by the police force, but it wasn’t until October 10, 2024, that law enforcement officers finally received actionable intelligence.
According to the statement, police surveillance stationed at the Gubio divisional headquarters received a tip-off indicating that Kur had been spotted in Gubio town.
Acting on this information, police officers swiftly mobilized to the location and successfully apprehended the convict.
Kur has since been profiled and, according to the police, will be handed over to the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) for appropriate further legal action.
His re-capture comes as a relief to local authorities, who have been working tirelessly to track down escapees since the flood.
The Borno State Police Command has also used the occasion to appeal to the public for assistance in locating any other fugitives or suspicious individuals.
In their statement, they encouraged anyone with relevant information to contact the nearest police station.
