Borno fires agency head accused of stealing 30 water tanks meant for IDP camp

Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, removed Abbah Tor from his position as the camp chairman of the State Emergency Management Agency.

This happened because Tor allegedly took around 30 water tanks that were supposed to help people at the Bama Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp.

These tanks were important for providing clean water and proper hygiene to those living in the camp.

A person named Zagazola Makama, who knows a lot about fighting against insurgencies and analyzes security in the Lake Chad region, talked about this on a social media platform.

He mentioned that a report from UNICEF showed that they had set up ways for over 11,000 IDPs in Bama to get safe water.

They also built latrines and bathing areas for hygiene. Despite these efforts, some people were causing trouble by stealing things meant for the IDPs.

UNICEF had plans to install 40 boreholes for water, but only 10 got installed, and many weren’t working properly.

Also, 30 tanks meant for the IDPs were taken and given to the police instead of being used for their intended purpose.

When Governor Zulum visited the camp, he told the IDPs that Abbah Tor was involved in stealing from them and warned him not to come back. More details emerged about the situation.

A UNICEF staff member, along with others, made a plan to take and sell the water facilities. They convinced Tor and some other officials to go along with it.

One camp official raised concerns about why things meant for the IDPs were being taken away.

The UNICEF staff member assured him that everything was fine and that they had permission from the higher-ups. Later, they came and took the water tanks away, but they were stopped by the police, and one person involved was arrested.

The investigation into this matter is ongoing, and the person who was arrested has been released on bail for now.
