The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra State has warned motorists in the state against driving on worn-out tyres and faulty wipers during this rainy season to avoid road mishaps.
The Anambra FRSC Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno gave the warning in a chat with newsmen in Awka, where he urged motorists to ensure their vehicles were in good condition before hitting the roads.
Asekhauno said the advice has become necessary as the rainy season intensifies across parts of the country.
She warned that roads become increasingly slippery during rainfall, making careful driving essential.
Asekhuno expressed concern over the continued use of worn-out tyres by some drivers, noting that such tyres lose proper grip on the road.
According to her, worn-out tyres reduce effective contact with the road surface, thereby causing vehicles to skid or veer off when brakes are applied.
Underscoring the need for motorists to reduce speed during rainfall, the FRSC boss argued that although the recommended speed limit remained 100 kilometres per hour, drivers must slow down significantly when roads are wet.
She also highlighted the importance of functional windscreen wipers, advising drivers to ensure both the wipers and water reservoirs were in proper working condition to maintain clear visibility.
“Drivers must carry out routine vehicle checks before driving. They must regularly check their tyres, oil and water levels.
“Motorists must obey traffic rules, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, and pull over safely when rainfall becomes too heavy and visibility is poor,” she cautioned.
Asekhauno reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to ensuring safety on Nigerian roads, especially during the challenging rainy season.
