There is no crueler way to lose a league title than to watch it disappear in the final seconds.   Across football history, champions have been crowned not when the whistle seemed imminent, but when hope had already begun to fade.   These are some of the most extraordinary final-day title deciders ever witnessed.   Arsenal 2-0 Liverpool, 1989    Few title deciders can match the sheer theatre of Arsenal’s visit to Anfield on 26 May 1989. Liverpool led the First Division and had not lost at home for almost three years. Arsenal needed to win by two clear goals to take the title, with the sides level on points and goal difference.   Alan Smith put Arsenal ahead in the second half, but Liverpool remained champions as the clock approached 90 minutes. Then, in injury time, Michael Thomas ran through on goal and calmly lifted the ball past Bruce Grobbelaar. Arsenal had won 2-0 and claimed the championship on goals scored. Only 39 seconds remained after Thomas’s decisive strike.   Blackburn Rovers, 1995    Kenny Dalglish’s Blackburn Rovers arrived at Anfield on the final day with a two-point advantage over Manchester United. Victory would make them champions, but defeat opened the door for Ferguson’s side.   Blackburn led Liverpool 1 0 before...
