Arewa Youth Warns 2027 Could Be Nigeria’s Last Election, Demands El-Rufai’s Release

A coalition of Northern youths under the umbrella of the Coalition of Arewa Youth Groups has warned that the 2027 general election could be Nigeria’s last if what it described as growing political intolerance and selective justice continue.

The group issued the warning during a press briefing on Thursday where it demanded the immediate release of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who is reportedly being held by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The coalition called on Northern youths to unite and vote out the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.

According to the group, El-Rufai’s continued detention raises concerns over fairness, arguing that several former governors currently under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) are moving freely, with some even seeking elective offices under the APC.

“If things continue to happen like this in Nigeria, 2027 might be our last attempt to have an election, because if we don’t fight the evil in the APC, we are going to be worse than under military rule,” the group said.

The coalition also urged residents of Kaduna State to resist what it described as attempts by Governor Uba Sani to turn the state into a one-party system.

It maintained that the arrest of El-Rufai would not derail its political objectives, insisting that it remained committed to unseating the current administration in the next general elections.

The group further declared that President Bola Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani could both be voted out of office through the democratic process in 2027.
