Angry Birds Enters World Video Game Hall of Fame After 5 Billion Downloads

The popular mobile game Angry Birds has been inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame, the The Strong National Museum of Play announced on Thursday.

Originally developed by Rovio Entertainment and released in 2009, Angry Birds became one of the most widely played mobile games, recording more than 5 billion downloads worldwide.

The museum said the game helped introduce many users to touch-based smartphone gaming at a time when mobile devices were becoming more common.

In a statement, Ben Mattes, creative officer for Angry Birds, said the recognition places the game among the industry’s leading titles. “The induction to the World Video Game Hall of Fame means we are standing shoulder to shoulder alongside the very greatest of gaming,” he said.

The museum selected Angry Birds as part of its 2026 class alongside Silent HillDragon Quest, and FIFA International Soccer.

The Hall of Fame recognizes games that have influenced the video game industry and popular culture over time.
