Anglican Priest Suspended in Anambra Over Fake Prophesies, Ecclesiastical Violations

The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Diocese on the Niger, has announced the suspension of a cleric, Rev. Ifunanya Maduka, popularly known as ‘Chaluoku’, from his position as Vicar of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Nteje, following allegations of misconduct.

In a suspension letter signed by the Bishop on the Niger, Rt. Rev. Owen Nwokolo, the Diocese said the suspension was based on credible and verifiable reports that the priest was involved in arranging and manipulating prophecies, allegedly presenting them as genuine manifestations from God.

According to the statement, the cleric was accused of engaging individuals, either by inducement or payment, to stage prophetic activities.

The Diocese further stated that Rev. Maduka admitted to involvement in the practice when confronted with the evidence.

The Church expressed concern that the development contradicted earlier assurances given by the priest regarding his adherence to Christian doctrine, Anglican discipline, and ethical standards expected of clergy.

The Diocese noted that the alleged actions raised serious ecclesiastical and moral issues, including false prophecy, abuse of the name of God, deception of the faithful, and conduct capable of financial exploitation under false pretense.

“As a result, Rev. Maduka has been suspended for six months without pay, with immediate effect. He has also been directed to hand over all church properties, documents, and funds in his possession to the People’s Warden and vacate the church premises within four days,” the statement said.

The Diocese further disclosed that a disciplinary panel will be constituted within one month to conduct a more detailed investigation and determine any additional sanctions in line with church regulations.

Reaffirming its stance, the Church emphasized that it does not condone actions that contradict Christian teachings, moral integrity, and the sacred responsibilities of ordained ministers.

The Bishop concluded the letter by urging the suspended cleric to use the period of the suspension to seek repentance and amend his ways.
