Anambra Police Kill Suspected Armed Robbers In Gun Duel

Awka – Police in Anambra on Friday shot dead two suspected members of notorious armed robbery gang in a gun battle along Zik’s Avenue by Miss Ellems Onitsha.

TNC gathered that the suspects were alleged to be members of a four-man gang of a notorious armed robber, Ikanda, presently remanded in prison custody in connection with a murder case.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed in a statement on the situation, said the Command got a distress call at about 10 am on Friday that the suspects were operating along the Ziks Avenue area.

 “Following the distress call, Police operatives attached to Fegge Division Onitsha quickly responded and rushed to the scene. As soon as the suspected armed robbers sighted the police they engaged them into a gun duel.

“In the process, two suspects were fatally wounded and overpowered while two others escaped.

“The injured suspects identified as Drogba and Fela, whose real names are yet unknown were rushed to the hospital for treatment but were certified dead on arrival by a medical doctor and their corpses deposited at the mortuary,” Mohammed said.

The PPRO revealed that exhibits recovered from the suspects include one locally made double barrel gun, four live cartridges, two expended cartridges, a charm, two wraps of dried leaves suspected to be indian hemp, two techno phones and other items.

He said the Command wishes to reassure Anambra residents of their safety before, during and after the Yuletide season and urged them not to relent in providing timely information for prompt response.
