Amazon Reduces Workforce At Alexa
Amazon is making changes to its Alexa team by reducing jobs. They want to focus more on advanced artificial intelligence. Many workers are affected, but the exact number isn’t clear. Amazon is shifting its focus to a special type of AI that creates code and long text from short commands.
They are stopping some projects to match their business goals. The job cuts don’t only affect the Alexa team. Other departments like music, gaming, and human resources are also affected. Some roles connected to Alexa in different units are impacted too.
Alexa, known for helping with tasks like setting timers, searching, playing music, and controlling homes, is a significant part of Amazon’s plans. There were concerns before about Alexa’s progress compared to other AI tech.
This caused worries among workers in charge of developing Alexa. A new leader, Panos Panay, has taken over the device unit from David Limp. Amazon had struggled to make money from its devices and services. Alexa faces competition from voice assistants by Alphabet and Apple.
Even though Amazon made strong money last quarter, the devices and services part isn’t making profits.
They are expecting an huge income making fourth quarter, especially with holiday shopping.
Despite the changes, the vice president in charge of Alexa, Daniel Rausch believes in Alexa’s future.
He understands the difficulty of blending large language models into a voice-focused AI system.
