Algerian Football Federation shortlists Peseiro as Belmadi’s possible successor

Jose Peseiro: Not yet Goodbye!

The Algerian Football Federation is reportedly interested in signing Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro, as revealed by Algerian publication DZ Foot. This interest stems from Algeria’s disappointing performance in the recent AFCON tournament in Côte d’Ivoire.

Following Algeria’s poor showing in the 2023 AFCON, where they failed to win any of their three group games and finished at the bottom of their group, Djamel Belmadi was relieved of his duties as head coach.

According to DZ Foot, Algerian Football Federation President Walid Sadi is keen to discuss with Peseiro, considering his successful campaign at the recent AFCON.

A shortlist of three potential candidates has been compiled by an ad-hoc commission established by the FAF, including José Peseiro (63 years old), Vladimir Petkovic (60 years old), and Carlos Queiroz (70 years old).

Although Algeria emerged as champions in the 2019 AFCON by defeating Nigeria in the semi-finals, they failed to progress beyond the group stage in the most recent edition.

It remains uncertain whether the Nigerian Football Federation will seek to extend Peseiro’s contract with the Super Eagles, as his current contract has ended. Since his appointment as Nigeria’s senior team manager in May 2022, Peseiro has overseen 22 games, winning 11, losing 7, and drawing 4.
