Alex Iwobi urges Nigerians to stick with the Super Eagles

Super Eagles and Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has pleaded with Nigerians to stick with the Super Eagles, regardless how disappointing they have been during their 2026 World Cup qualifiers games against Lesotho and Zimbabwe in Uyo, Nigeria and Rwanda.

Iwobi, who participated deeply in both games where Nigeria were held to 1–1 draws, has acknowledged their display to be disappointing, and they would rather not dwell on the horrendous results as they look forward to better performance. “Of course, it’s disappointing, we should be able to get more points and more goals. We will not dwell on this; we will push and fight to the end to make sure we qualify.

The Fulham middleman also traced their shambolic display to their strenuous long flight which took almost 7 seven hours before they could reach Rwanda for the game second game against Zimbabwe.

“He already (the coach) said the travel was a lot for us. After the first game, we had to fly for four hours and another three hours. As players, we shouldn’t use that as an excuse, and we have a lot of quality in the side. Like the coach said, the first half wasn’t good enough, but the second was better, so we have to look at that and see what we can do better to improve.

It’s just the beginning, I’ll urge the Nigerian fans to stick by us because we will continue to fight,” Iwobi said. Irate Nigerians have called for the immediate replacement of Francis Uzoho who they feel has been below par since he was handed the number spot. Uzoho has featured in seven games for the Super Eagles, and he has conceded 7 goals as well.

Nigeria didn’t make it to the Qatar World Cup last year after they lost the spot to Ghana.

The Super Eagles’ next qualifier will be against Bafana Bafana of South Africa in June, the giant of Africa would have been through with the 2024 African Cup scheduled for January 13 to February 11 in the Ivory Coast.
