AFCON 2025: Ghanaian Referee Daniel Laryea to Officiate Nigeria–Morocco Semi-Final

Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Laryea has been appointed to take charge of the highly anticipated Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 semi-final clash between Nigeria and host nation Morocco.

The crucial encounter is scheduled for Wednesday night at the Prince Moulay Abdallah Stadium in Rabat, where both football powerhouses will battle for a place in the final of the continental showpiece.

Laryea’s selection underscores the confidence reposed in his experience and consistency at the highest level of African football.

The 39-year-old official has been one of the standout referees at the ongoing tournament, earning commendation for his calmness, authority, and sound decision-making in high-pressure matches.

He recently served as Video Assistant Referee (VAR) during Morocco’s tense quarter-final victory over Cameroon, a game that required sharp judgment and composure.

Earlier in the competition, Laryea was also the centre referee for the group-stage clash between Algeria and Burkina Faso, where he was praised for his effective control of the match.

Widely regarded as one of Africa’s elite referees, Laryea has an impressive track record that includes multiple AFCON appearances as well as regular officiating duties in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.

Wednesday’s semi-final is expected to be fiercely contested. Morocco will aim to maximize home advantage as they pursue a historic AFCON triumph, while three-time champions Nigeria will be determined to assert their pedigree and book another final appearance.

With so much at stake, officiating decisions are likely to come under intense scrutiny. Laryea’s experience and calm authority are expected to play a key role in ensuring fair play as Africa’s footballing attention turns to Rabat for one of AFCON 2025’s defining matches.
