The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has blamed the administration of Bola Tinubu for the worsening food crisis in the country, alleging that government policies have left more than 17 million Nigerians facing severe hunger and possible death.
The opposition party described the situation as a “government-created humanitarian disaster.”
The ADC made the remarks in response to a report by the World Food Programme (WFP), which revealed that over 17 million people across nine conflict-affected states in Northern Nigeria are experiencing acute food insecurity.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, obtained by The News Chronicle, the party criticised the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government, accusing it of showing “cruel indifference” to the worsening humanitarian crisis.
It attributed the situation largely to the government’s inability to curb banditry and terrorism, which have displaced farming communities, as well as economic policies that have made food unaffordable for millions of Nigerians.
The statement read, “According to the WFP, more than 17 million Nigerians across nine conflict-affected northern states are now facing crisis, emergency or catastrophic levels of food insecurity.
“This represents an increase of almost two million people from previous projections. In Borno State alone, more than three million people are acutely food insecure, while the combined figure for Borno, Adamawa and Yobe has risen to 6.2 million people.
“These are not opposition figures. They are not campaign slogans. They are the findings of the world’s leading humanitarian agency on hunger.
“The WFP also identifies the principal causes of this unfolding tragedy: expanding insecurity, attacks on farming communities, mass displacement, restricted humanitarian access and declining support for vulnerable populations.
“In other words, the hunger confronting millions of Nigerians today is not a natural disaster. It is an APC-inspired government-created humanitarian disaster.”
Abdullahi further argued that the deepening humanitarian crisis is the predictable consequence of a government that has failed to protect Nigerians, secure farming communities and address the cost-of-living crisis, which he said has worsened under the current administration.
