Adamawa State Governor Urges Residents in Flood-Prone Areas to Relocate

—

Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has reiterated his call for residents living in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer locations.

This appeal comes as a precautionary measure against the recurring dangers associated with flooding in vulnerable regions.
The governor’s plea was made during a fact-finding and commiseration visit to Madagali Local Government Area, following the recent devastating floods that claimed several lives, destroyed properties, and displaced numerous families.
The communities in Madagali were severely impacted by the flood disaster that occurred on August 21, 2024, following an intense downpour that lasted for approximately ten hours.
The heavy rains led to widespread destruction, leaving many without shelter and in urgent need of assistance.
Governor Fintiri, who was represented by his deputy, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, visited Shuwa and other affected communities to assess the damage and offer government support.
During the visit on Saturday, the governor expressed deep sympathy for the victims and assured them that his administration would continue to provide relief to those affected by the disaster.
In a show of immediate support, Governor Fintiri also launched the distribution of relief materials to the affected communities.
These relief items, which included both food and non-food essentials valued at millions of naira, were intended to alleviate the suffering of the displaced families.
The governor emphasized that the state government was committed to mitigating the devastating effects of the flood on public and private properties.
Speaking during the visit, Governor Fintiri urged the leadership of Madagali Local Government Area and other key stakeholders to collaborate in relocating affected residents to safer locations.
He stressed that his administration would spare no effort in ensuring that those displaced by the flood received the necessary aid and support.
Additionally, the governor made a heartfelt appeal to the federal government and humanitarian organizations to extend their support to the flood victims in Madagali.
He noted that such assistance would complement the state’s efforts in providing much-needed relief to those affected by the disaster.
According to an assessment conducted by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), over 10,000 people were directly impacted by the flooding.
Many of these individuals have sought refuge in temporary camps set up by the local government, while others have relocated to safer areas.
The Executive Chairman of Madagali Local Government Council, Mr. Simon Musa, and the District Head of Duhu, Alhaji Mustafa Mohammed Sanusi, expressed their gratitude to the Adamawa State government for its prompt response and concern for the well-being of the flood victims.
They revealed that over one thousand hectares of farmland were also affected by the flooding, which has further compounded the difficulties faced by the local communities.
Despite the challenges, the local leaders commended the state government’s swift intervention and expressed hope that with continued support, the affected residents would be able to rebuild their lives in the aftermath of the disaster.
