Abuja trader apprehended for repackaging local rice as foreign to enhance profit

In a recent incident in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, a 39-year-old trader named Nonso Nwobodo was apprehended by the Nigerian police.

He was caught repackaging local rice into bags labeled as foreign rice, allegedly in an attempt to increase his profits.

The incident occurred on Saturday around 4:15 pm at Plot 740 in the Durumi area of the FCT.

According to sources within the government, Nonso Nwobodo was packaging locally produced rice into bags that were printed to resemble foreign rice packaging.

This deceptive practice aimed to mislead consumers into believing they were purchasing imported rice.

Authorities discovered 160 bags of rice of various sizes, ranging from 5kg to 50kg, that had already been repackaged to mimic foreign rice packaging.

Additionally, 53 empty bags previously used for local rice had been altered to appear as foreign rice packaging.

Furthermore, 590 new empty bags designed to resemble foreign rice bags were found at the scene.

The police have seized all the rice and related materials involved in the scheme. Despite attempts to contact Josephine Adeh, the spokesperson for the FCT police, no response was received to calls or messages.

This incident highlights the need for consumers to remain vigilant and aware of potential deceptive practices in the market.

Authorities are working to ensure the integrity of food products and to prevent such fraudulent activities from occurring in the future.
