JAMB Issues Fresh Warning to Universities Over Admission Letters

—

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned universities and other tertiary institutions against issuing official admission letters to candidates, insisting that the responsibility rests solely with the board.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, gave the warning when he received a delegation from Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja, during a courtesy visit to his office.

According to Aina, JAMB is the only body legally empowered to issue official admission letters to candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions across Nigeria, including universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

He expressed concern that candidates often accept admission documents issued by institutions as genuine without verifying their validity.

The registrar urged institutions engaging in the practice to desist, stressing that they were also responsible for ensuring that candidates obtained the appropriate admission documents from JAMB.

He recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education had directed all tertiary institutions to process admissions through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), warning that any admission conducted outside the platform was illegal and invalid.

Aina added that institutions could not substitute their own admission letters for the official letters issued by JAMB after candidates had accepted their offers through CAPS.

He further stated that only admissions processed through the platform would be recognised for purposes such as mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
